The Quiet before the Storm
What to do while waiting on God.

There is a place for us in God, just before a mighty move of His Spirit, that is similar to the quiet before a storm. And in this place of stillness, it is important that we recognize what is going on.

To understand this spiritual phenomenon, let us look first at the natural. Just before a large weather front moves in, there is a stillness in which all of nature becomes motionless. Birds go to roost. Animals return to their safe places. And a vacuum seems to suck the air right out of the atmosphere. The silence is almost tangible. Then, the storm comes.

And so it can be in the spiritual realm just before a great move of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life. Before His rushing mighty wind, there is sometimes an immobility in which all is still. In this personal vacuum, you think ...

“What am I doing wrong?"
"Why aren’t my prayers being answered?"
"Why do my needs remain unmet?”

In this pivotal place, when you are tempted to put down your sword of faith, it is important to remember that God is faithful. When the pressure is on, go back to the basics. Do you really believe that Jesus came so that you could have life – and have it more abundantly? Do you really believe that His sacrifice is sufficient? Then go to Psalm 103 and forget not all His benefits.

Be still, rest, and remain at peace in God. Recognize this lull as the quiet before the storm – before the rushing mighty wind of the Holy Spirit. This is not a time of sadness and unanswered prayer. It is a time of joy and expectation.

For you shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace.
For when the Lord turned the captivity of Zion,

we were like them that dream.

Then was our mouth filled with laughter,

and our tongue with singing …

Reference photo at the top of the page: One day in the spring, this baby bird sat just outside our office window. Both his parents spent the afternoon trying to teach this reluctant bird to fly. They took turns flying low, circling, chirping, and demonstrating technique. All the while, our little feathered friend held on tightly to the branch. As the sun began to set, he finally spread his wings, and the three headed skyward. Early childhood education: fly low, circle close, hover, encourage, instruct, be patient, work to maintain close family ties.
