Charlie's Quest
How to live a life of provision.

Outside our kitchen window is a little garden. Hanging baskets and a bird feeder swing peacefully under the bowing tree limbs. It’s a beautiful scene any time of the day.

This year, as in the past, a squirrel we named Charlie has taken up permanent residence in the bird feeder tray. He sits and swings as he eats his fill. So to outsmart him, we moved the feeder, hanging it on a higher branch, suspended from a 10 foot twine. Yet, he remains undaunted. He simply climbs down the thin string and takes his position in the tray. This furry fellow has one driving force – to obtain his provision. All day. Every day.

So what’s the point of this story?

  • Single-mindedness

  • Steadfastness

  • Determination

  • To set one’s face like flint

Imagine if we allowed that same single-mindedness that drives Charlie’s day to direct our own. A better question may be … what is it that we should be single-minded about?

The answer is almost 3,000 years old and can be found in the book of Isaiah. We are simply to trust God. We are not to fear.  And we are not to allow ourselves to yield to fear’s companion, worry. We are simply to keep our gaze steady and our eyes on Him. And in this single-mindedness, we know that we will not be left wanting. We will, like Charlie, scurry through a life overflowing with provision. A life where all of our needs are met.

“For the Lord God will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded:
therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.”

 Isaiah, Chapter 50: Verse 7

Reference photo at the top of the page: One day in the spring, this baby bird sat just outside our office window. Both his parents spent the afternoon trying to teach this reluctant bird to fly. They took turns flying low, circling, chirping, and demonstrating technique. All the while, our little feathered friend held on tightly to the branch. As the sun began to set, he finally spread his wings, and the three headed skyward. Early childhood education: fly low, circle close, hover, encourage, instruct, be patient, work to maintain close family ties.
