Complacency Verses Peace
What drives your world?

There is a certain comfort that comes from routine, from knowing what to expect:

  • That first sip of coffee in the morning.

  • The squeak of the mail carrier’s brakes.

  • The welcome of a certain pillow after the evening news.

But too much routine, too much sameness, can often cause us to become complacent. It’s a subtle thing. It's not as if we get there on purpose. We simply wake up one morning and realize that life has become ordinary. Needs are met. Life is predictable. And faith … well … because it has no need to rise, faith lies dormant.

But then there is a stirring. A churning on the inside signaling that maybe, just maybe, it is time for the seasons to change.

  • We ponder.

  • We consider.

  • We pray.

  • We become aware of an emerging dissatisfaction.  On the inside.

  • On paper, everything looks wonderful.  People admire the outside perfection of it all.

  • But inside, there emerges a restlessness.  It is not logical.  But still, in the quiet hours, it is there.

Then ... suddenly, the hesitation yields to the brave certainty that our footsteps are ordered by the Lord. That He has gone before us and is our rear guard.  Driven by a need to breathe, we are convinced that when we step out into that new venture, He will meet us there.

That once comforting and familiar foundation of routine now seems mundane and confining.  That one-time security of sameness becomes replaced by the knowledge that great and wonderful exploits of faith await us. Faith rises in our hearts

Joyful expectation overtakes us.

We step out, led by peace, and we behold His glory.

What drives your world?  Is there a stirring in your soul? Take inventory. The season may be changing. Is it time to turn a corner, or to begin anew?

Reference photo at the top of the page: One day in the spring, this baby bird sat just outside our office window. Both his parents spent the afternoon trying to teach this reluctant bird to fly. They took turns flying low, circling, chirping, and demonstrating technique. All the while, our little feathered friend held on tightly to the branch. As the sun began to set, he finally spread his wings, and the three headed skyward. Early childhood education: fly low, circle close, hover, encourage, instruct, be patient, work to maintain close family ties.
